Evidence supporting the use of: German Chamomile
For the health condition: Itching
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) is traditionally used for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, including the treatment of skin conditions such as itching (pruritus). Beyond traditional use, there is a moderate level of scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for this purpose. Several clinical studies and reviews have investigated the topical application of chamomile extracts for dermatological conditions. The anti-pruritic effect is primarily attributed to its active constituents, such as chamazulene and α-bisabolol, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antipruritic properties in laboratory and animal studies. Small-scale randomized controlled trials and observational studies have found that topical chamomile preparations (such as creams and ointments) can reduce itching and irritation, particularly in patients with eczema or atopic dermatitis. For example, a double-blind study published in European Journal of Medical Research (1998) found chamomile cream to be as effective as low-dose hydrocortisone in relieving eczema symptoms, including itching. However, the overall quality of evidence is limited by small sample sizes and methodological variability. Systematic reviews generally conclude that while chamomile shows promise, larger and more rigorous clinical trials are needed to fully establish its efficacy and safety for treating itching. Thus, its use for this indication is supported by both tradition and preliminary scientific research, but with moderate strength of evidence.
