Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lantana camara has been traditionally used in various folk medicine systems, especially in parts of Asia, Africa, and South America, for the management of skin ailments, including itching and other dermatological complaints. The plant’s leaves are commonly applied topically as poultices or pastes to soothe itching, rashes, and insect bites. Ethnobotanical surveys and traditional medicine texts document such uses, citing its purported anti-inflammatory and antipruritic properties. However, scientific validation for these specific uses remains limited. Some laboratory studies suggest that Lantana camara contains compounds with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, which could theoretically contribute to relief from itching caused by infections or inflammation. Nonetheless, direct clinical evidence or robust pharmacological studies specifically addressing anti-itch (antipruritic) efficacy in humans are lacking. Furthermore, caution is advised, as the plant can be toxic if ingested and may cause allergic contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals. In summary, while traditional use for itching is well documented, scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness and safety for this indication is modest at best.
