Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Lysimachia (commonly known as loosestrife or by its TCM name, Jīn Qián Cǎo) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), primarily for conditions related to the urinary tract, such as clearing damp-heat and promoting urination. Its application for itching is less prominent but does exist within certain traditional frameworks, particularly as an adjunctive herb in formulas designed to address skin conditions associated with dampness or heat, which may present with pruritus (itching). However, there is very limited direct documentation in classical or modern TCM texts specifically recommending Lysimachia for itching as a primary indication. Scientific studies on Lysimachia focus mainly on its anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and diuretic properties, with scant research directly examining its efficacy for pruritus. No robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies provide evidence for its use in treating itching. Thus, any support for Lysimachia in this context is rooted in traditional use, and the evidence is weak, largely anecdotal, and not substantiated by modern scientific methods.
