Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

The use of Orchid tree, most commonly referring to species in the genus Bauhinia (such as Bauhinia variegata), to treat itching is primarily justified by traditional medicine practices, especially within South Asian systems like Ayurveda and Unani. In these systems, various parts of the plant (leaves, bark, flowers) are applied topically or used in decoctions for skin ailments, including pruritus (itching). Historical Ayurvedic texts cite the use of Bauhinia variegata for treating a range of skin disorders, attributing anti-inflammatory and soothing properties to the plant. However, the scientific evidence supporting this use is limited. Some laboratory studies have indicated that extracts from Bauhinia species possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically contribute to relief from itching, but these studies are preliminary and often not focused specifically on pruritus or conducted in humans. There are few, if any, clinical trials directly investigating the efficacy of Orchid tree preparations for itching. Therefore, while the practice has a traditional basis, the quality and quantity of scientific validation remain low, justifying a modest evidence rating.
