Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) has a long history of traditional use for various skin conditions, including itching (pruritus). In folk medicine and herbal traditions across Europe, chamomile extracts, ointments, and compresses have been used topically to soothe irritated or itchy skin, eczema, and minor rashes. The anti-inflammatory and mild anti-allergenic properties, attributed to bioactive constituents such as apigenin and bisabolol, are believed to contribute to its effects.

While Roman Chamomile's use for itching is well established in traditional practices, scientific validation is limited. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest that chamomile extracts can reduce inflammation and histamine-induced skin reactions, which are mechanisms relevant to itching. However, most clinical studies focus on German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita), and robust randomized controlled trials on Roman Chamomile for itching in humans are lacking.

In summary, Roman Chamomile is traditionally used for itch relief, and there is a plausible biological basis for this use, but high-quality scientific evidence remains sparse. Its primary justification comes from traditional and historical use rather than strong clinical data.
