Evidence supporting the use of: Spilanthes
For the health condition: Itching
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Spilanthes, commonly known as the "toothache plant," has a long history of traditional use in various cultures for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, particularly in the treatment of oral discomfort and minor skin irritations. In traditional medicine systems, especially in South America, Africa, and Asia, Spilanthes extracts and preparations have been used topically to alleviate itching caused by insect bites, rashes, and other skin irritations. The plant’s main active compound, spilanthol, is thought to provide a numbing effect and mild anti-inflammatory action, both of which can help reduce the sensation of itch.
Despite these traditional uses, robust scientific evidence supporting Spilanthes for the treatment of itching is limited. A few in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that extracts of Spilanthes possess anti-inflammatory and local anesthetic properties, which could plausibly contribute to relief from itching. However, these findings have not been extensively corroborated in large-scale human clinical trials specifically targeting pruritus (itching). Therefore, while traditional use exists and some preliminary scientific rationale is present, the evidence base remains modest, and the effect is primarily supported by ethnobotanical reports rather than rigorous clinical validation.
