Evidence supporting the use of: Amor seco
For the health condition: Jaundice (adults)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Amor seco is a common name referring to several species, most notably Desmodium adscendens and Bidens pilosa, both of which have been used in traditional medicine in various cultures. In the context of jaundice, particularly in adults, the use of Amor seco is primarily justified by traditional practices. Ethnobotanical records from regions such as Central and South America, as well as parts of Africa, describe preparations of Amor seco for ailments related to the liver, including jaundice. For example, Desmodium adscendens has been documented in traditional West African medicine as a remedy for liver dysfunction and jaundice. Similarly, Bidens pilosa is used in folk medicine in the Caribbean and Latin America for hepatitis and jaundice-like symptoms.
However, while there are some preliminary laboratory studies indicating potential hepatoprotective effects of extracts from these plants, there is limited clinical or pharmacological evidence directly supporting their efficacy for jaundice in humans. Most available data are either anecdotal or based on animal models, and rigorous, controlled clinical trials are lacking. Therefore, the use of Amor seco for jaundice remains primarily rooted in tradition, with modest support from experimental studies but insufficient scientific validation.
