Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Saraca asoca (commonly known as Asoka) has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, primarily for gynecological disorders, but there are some traditional references to its use in managing jaundice and other liver-related conditions. Ancient Ayurvedic texts like the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita mention Asoka in formulations for a variety of ailments, though its primary indications are for menstrual disorders and uterine health. Reports of its use for jaundice are less common and less emphasized in classical literature, often appearing as part of polyherbal preparations rather than as a standalone remedy. Modern scientific studies on Asoka's efficacy for jaundice are lacking. There is some pharmacological evidence that Asoka bark contains flavonoids, tannins, and glycosides with antioxidant properties, which theoretically could be beneficial for liver health. However, direct experimental or clinical studies specifically evaluating Asoka for the treatment or support of jaundice in adults are absent in the scientific literature. Therefore, while traditional texts provide minor support for its use in liver conditions, there is insufficient evidence to substantiate its efficacy for jaundice beyond historical practice.
