Betel (Piper betle) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems across South and Southeast Asia. In Ayurvedic and other folk medicinal practices, betel leaves have been used for various ailments, including digestive issues, infections, and as a general tonic. Specifically, for jaundice—a condition characterized by yellowing of the skin and eyes due to elevated bilirubin—betel has occasionally been included in herbal formulations intended to "cleanse" the liver or support liver function. The rationale in traditional use is often based on betel's perceived detoxifying properties and its role in stimulating bile flow and digestion. However, scientific research validating the effectiveness of betel for treating jaundice in adults is extremely limited. The majority of contemporary studies on betel focus on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, but not directly on its use for liver disorders or jaundice. There are some in vitro and animal studies suggesting certain extracts from betel leaves might have hepatoprotective effects, but these are preliminary, and no robust clinical trials exist to support its use for jaundice in humans. Thus, while its use is rooted in traditional practice, particularly in South Asian herbal medicine, there is insufficient scientific evidence to recommend betel as a treatment for jaundice.
