Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Calamus (Acorus calamus), also known as sweet flag, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Unani. In these systems, Calamus rhizome is sometimes used for liver-related conditions, including jaundice, due to its reputed hepatoprotective, detoxifying, and anti-inflammatory effects. Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita mention the use of Vacha (Calamus) for various ailments, though its application for jaundice is less commonly emphasized compared to other herbs. In folk medicine, Calamus is occasionally used in polyherbal formulations aimed at supporting liver function and addressing symptoms of jaundice in adults.

However, scientific evidence validating these traditional uses is minimal. There are a handful of animal studies indicating potential liver-protective effects of Calamus extracts, but these do not directly address jaundice nor are there any robust clinical trials in humans demonstrating efficacy or safety for this indication. As such, its use for jaundice is based almost entirely on tradition rather than modern scientific validation.

In summary, while Calamus is cited in some traditional medicinal practices for liver support, the quality and quantity of evidence specifically supporting its use for jaundice in adults is very limited.
