Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Carthamus, commonly known as safflower, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Chinese and Middle Eastern herbal practices. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Carthamus tinctorius (the dried flowers) is often used to "invigorate the blood" and "dispel stasis," and it has occasionally been included in herbal formulas for conditions described as related to the liver, including jaundice. However, these uses are based on traditional theories rather than on a modern biomedical understanding of jaundice or its pathophysiology. There is little direct evidence from controlled trials or scientific research to support the use of Carthamus for treating jaundice in adults. The available scientific literature primarily focuses on safflower’s potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, but these findings do not directly translate into efficacy for jaundice, a condition typically caused by liver dysfunction or hemolysis. As such, while Carthamus may be used traditionally for liver-related ailments, its use for jaundice is justified by tradition rather than validated by rigorous scientific evidence.
