Evidence supporting the use of: Clerodendrum phlomidis
For the health condition: Jaundice (adults)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Clerodendrum phlomidis, known in Ayurveda as "Agnimantha," has a longstanding history of use in traditional Indian medicine, including as a remedy for jaundice in adults. Ancient Ayurvedic texts cite its use in formulations intended to support liver function and address symptoms of jaundice, which is typically understood in traditional systems as a manifestation of liver dysfunction or "Pitta" imbalance. The roots and leaves of Clerodendrum phlomidis are commonly used in decoctions or polyherbal mixtures to alleviate symptoms related to jaundice, such as yellowing of the skin and eyes.
However, the scientific evidence base for this use is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies indicate that extracts from Clerodendrum phlomidis possess hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically mitigate liver damage and support recovery from jaundice. For example, a few animal model experiments suggest that extracts may reduce biochemical markers of liver injury induced by toxins. Despite these promising preliminary findings, there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans that specifically evaluate its efficacy and safety for treating jaundice. Therefore, while the plant’s use is well-documented in traditional medicine, high-quality scientific validation is lacking, and its use for jaundice should be approached with caution.
