Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cyathula, a genus of plants in the Amaranthaceae family (most notably Cyathula prostrata and Cyathula officinalis), has been traditionally used in various ethnomedicinal systems, particularly in Africa and Asia, for the management of jaundice and liver-related ailments. In traditional African medicine, decoctions or infusions of Cyathula roots or whole plants are administered to adults presenting with symptoms of jaundice, believed to help "cleanse" the liver and promote bile flow. Similarly, in some systems of Indian folk medicine, Cyathula is one of several herbs used in polyherbal formulations for hepatic support.

The evidence supporting these uses is primarily anecdotal and based on long-standing tradition, with documentation found in ethnobotanical surveys and local pharmacopeias. However, there is a lack of robust clinical data or well-designed pharmacological studies to validate the efficacy or mechanisms of Cyathula for treating jaundice in adults. Some preliminary in vitro and animal studies suggest hepatoprotective potential for related species, but these results are not specific to jaundice, nor have they been widely replicated or extended to human trials. Therefore, while the traditional use is well documented, scientific evidence remains limited.
