Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Embelia, particularly Embelia ribes (commonly known as Vidanga in Ayurveda), has been traditionally used in various systems of traditional medicine, including Ayurveda and Unani, primarily for its anthelmintic (anti-parasitic) properties. There are references in classical Ayurvedic texts and ethnobotanical surveys documenting its use for a range of ailments, including digestive disorders, liver-related conditions, and specifically for jaundice (known as "Kamala" in Ayurveda). The rationale in traditional medicine is that Embelia helps "purify" the blood, improve liver function, and support bile flow, thereby addressing jaundice symptoms. However, while these uses are well-documented in traditional medicine literature, modern scientific validation for Embelia's efficacy in treating jaundice in adults is limited. Few animal studies suggest hepatoprotective effects of Embelia extracts, but high-quality clinical trials in humans are lacking. Thus, while Embelia's use for jaundice is supported by tradition and some preclinical data, there is insufficient scientific evidence to recommend it confidently for this purpose in adults.
