Evidence supporting the use of: Greater Celandine
For the health condition: Jaundice (adults)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Greater Celandine (Chelidonium majus) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for liver and gallbladder complaints, including jaundice in adults. The use of the plant is primarily rooted in European folk traditions, where it was believed to have "liver cleansing" properties and was used to stimulate bile flow. Ancient texts, such as those from Dioscorides and later European herbalists, mention the plant as beneficial for "obstructions of the liver" and jaundice-like symptoms. However, the evidence supporting its effectiveness is largely anecdotal or based on traditional doctrine rather than modern clinical studies.
Modern scientific research on Greater Celandine is limited and primarily focuses on its potential hepatotoxicity rather than efficacy. Some laboratory studies have shown that extracts of the plant can stimulate bile secretion in animals, which theoretically could support its traditional use. However, there is a lack of well-designed human clinical trials demonstrating safety or efficacy in treating jaundice specifically. Furthermore, case reports have associated oral use of Greater Celandine with liver toxicity and hepatitis, leading to regulatory advisories in several countries. Therefore, while its use in jaundice is justified by tradition, there is little to no robust scientific evidence supporting its safety or effectiveness for this indication.
