Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Leptadenia reticulata, commonly known as "Jivanti," has a long-standing use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine systems. It is reputed in these traditions for its hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) properties, and as a remedy to support liver health, which includes use in cases of jaundice (a condition marked by yellowing of the skin due to elevated bilirubin, often reflecting underlying liver dysfunction). Historical Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita mention Jivanti as a "Rasayana" herb, with broad rejuvenative and tonic properties, and its use in various formulations for liver disorders. However, scientific validation of its efficacy specifically for jaundice in adults is limited. A few in vitro and animal studies indicate that Leptadenia reticulata extracts possess antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects, potentially mitigating chemical-induced liver injury, but these studies do not directly address jaundice in humans nor do they provide robust clinical evidence. No well-controlled clinical trials in humans have demonstrated definitive efficacy for jaundice treatment. Therefore, while Leptadenia is traditionally used for liver-related ailments including jaundice, the supporting evidence is primarily ethnobotanical and based on traditional knowledge rather than modern scientific validation.
