Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Polygonatum cirrhifolium (commonly known as "Whorled Solomon’s Seal") is referenced in several traditional medicine systems, particularly within Ayurvedic and some Himalayan folk medicine contexts. It is valued primarily as a tonic, adaptogen, and for its purported rejuvenating effects. Specific references to its use for jaundice are rare in classical Ayurvedic texts, but there are scattered ethnobotanical reports (especially from Himalayan regions of India and Nepal) where it is sometimes cited among plants used for liver-related conditions, including jaundice. These uses are generally based on traditional practitioners’ empirical knowledge and anecdotal evidence rather than systematic clinical studies.

There is currently no robust scientific validation supporting the efficacy of Polygonatum cirrhifolium for jaundice or hepatoprotective activity in adults. The limited pharmacological studies that exist focus on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and adaptogenic properties, but do not address direct effects on bilirubin metabolism, liver enzymes, or specific mechanisms relevant to jaundice. Therefore, while its use for jaundice in adults is rooted in regional traditional practice, its evidence base is weak, and it is not widely recognized for this application outside of those contexts.
