Premna species, particularly Premna integrifolia (commonly known as "Agnimantha"), have a longstanding use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of liver disorders, including jaundice in adults. Classical Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita mention Premna as part of polyherbal formulations intended for "kamala" (the Ayurvedic term for jaundice). Its bark, leaves, and roots are used in decoctions and powders thought to have hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects. However, the traditional rationale is based on empirical experience, the doctrine of signatures, and centuries of anecdotal use rather than controlled scientific studies.

Scientific validation of Premna's efficacy in jaundice is limited. Some preliminary in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Premna may have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and mild hepatoprotective activity, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Reviews of ethnobotanical and pharmacological literature confirm its historical use for liver conditions but consistently note the absence of high-quality clinical evidence. Therefore, while Premna is traditionally used for jaundice, its use is not strongly supported by contemporary scientific research.
