Evidence supporting the use of: Silydianin
For the health condition: Jaundice (adults)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Silydianin is a flavonolignan found in the extract of Silybum marianum (milk thistle), which has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, particularly in Europe and Asia, to support liver health and treat conditions such as jaundice. Most of the traditional use is attributed to the whole milk thistle extract or silymarin complex (which includes silydianin, silybin, and others) rather than silydianin alone. The rationale for its use in jaundice stems from the historical observation that milk thistle appears to alleviate symptoms of liver distress and improve liver function. However, direct clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of silydianin specifically for jaundice in adults is limited, and most studies have examined silymarin as a whole rather than its individual components. The evidence rating reflects the reliance on traditional use and limited direct data: while there is some preclinical and animal research suggesting hepatoprotective effects, high-quality randomized controlled trials in humans with jaundice are lacking. Therefore, while its use is rooted in tradition and historical practice, robust scientific validation for silydianin alone in jaundice treatment is insufficient.
