Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sweet Goldenrod (Solidago odora) has been used traditionally in some herbal medicine systems for a variety of ailments, including as a diuretic, for urinary tract conditions, and occasionally as a “liver tonic.” There are anecdotal reports and some ethnobotanical records suggesting that sweet goldenrod, along with other goldenrod species, was sometimes used by Native American tribes and early American herbalists to support liver health or as a remedy for jaundice—a symptom characterized by yellowing of the skin or eyes due to increased bilirubin. However, there is very limited documentation specifically tying sweet goldenrod to the treatment of jaundice in adults, and these uses appear primarily in herbal folklore and traditional texts rather than in formal medical literature.

There is no robust scientific evidence (such as clinical trials or pharmacological studies) supporting the efficacy or safety of sweet goldenrod for jaundice or direct liver-related conditions. Most modern herbal compendia do not list it as a standard remedy for jaundice. Its use, therefore, is rooted in tradition rather than science, and the strength of evidence supporting its use for jaundice is weak (rated 1/5), based largely on historical and anecdotal sources rather than research-based validation.
