Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Taraxacum, commonly known as dandelion, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurveda, and European herbalism for a variety of liver-related conditions, including jaundice. In TCM, dandelion is considered to have "heat-clearing" and "detoxifying" properties and is sometimes prescribed for conditions characterized by liver dysfunction or biliary stasis, which are believed to relate to symptoms of jaundice. Similarly, in European folk medicine, dandelion root and leaves have been used as a "liver tonic" and to support bile flow. However, scientific evidence supporting the use of Taraxacum for treating jaundice in adults is limited. There are a small number of preclinical studies suggesting potential hepatoprotective or choleretic (bile-promoting) effects, but robust human clinical trials are lacking. No major medical guidelines recommend dandelion for jaundice, and there is insufficient evidence to support its safety or efficacy for this specific indication in adults. Most of the rationale for its use in jaundice remains rooted in traditional practice rather than validated biomedical research.
