Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

"Amor seco" is a common name used for several plants, most frequently referring to Desmodium adscendens or Desmodium incanum in Latin America. In traditional herbal medicine, particularly within some South American and Caribbean communities, extracts and decoctions of "Amor seco" have been historically used for a range of ailments, including liver-related issues such as jaundice. The rationale is often based on the plant's perceived "liver cleansing" or anti-inflammatory properties according to folk medicine. However, there is little to no robust clinical or pharmacological data specifically supporting its efficacy for treating jaundice in infants. Most references to its use are anecdotal or found in ethnobotanical surveys rather than controlled scientific studies. Furthermore, safety in infants has not been established, and the use of herbal remedies in newborns carries potential risks due to immature liver and kidney function. Modern medical guidelines for managing neonatal jaundice do not include Amor seco or any herbal remedies as validated treatments. Therefore, while there is some traditional precedent for its use, the overall evidence base is weak, and scientific validation is lacking.
