For the health condition: Jaundice (infants)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Bael (Aegle marmelos), also known as Bengal quince, is a plant widely used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda. Its fruit, leaves, and roots have been used for a variety of ailments, including digestive issues, diabetes, and liver disorders. In the context of jaundice, particularly in infants, traditional practices in some regions of India and Southeast Asia include the use of bael preparations as a supportive remedy. The rationale in traditional medicine is based on the belief that bael helps to "cool" the body and support liver function, thereby aiding in the resolution of jaundice symptoms. However, there is limited scientific research specifically evaluating the efficacy or safety of bael in the treatment of jaundice in infants. Most available studies on bael focus on its antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and anti-inflammatory properties, but these are predominantly preclinical or involve adult animal models. There is currently no robust clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness or safety for neonatal jaundice. Therefore, while bael's use is justified by tradition, its evidence base is weak, and caution should be exercised, especially in infants, until more rigorous studies are conducted.
