For the health condition: Jaundice (infants)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Chirata (Swertia chirata) is a bitter herb traditionally used in Ayurveda and other traditional medicine systems across South Asia for managing a variety of liver disorders, including jaundice. The rationale for its use in infant jaundice stems from its perceived "liver stimulating" and "blood purifying" properties as described in traditional texts. However, the scientific evidence substantiating these claims, especially for use in infants, is minimal to non-existent. Most available studies regarding Chirata's hepatoprotective effects are limited to in vitro or animal models, and focus primarily on adult liver injury rather than neonatal jaundice. There are no high-quality clinical trials or systematic reviews evaluating the efficacy or safety of Chirata for treating jaundice in infants. Furthermore, the safety profile of Chirata in neonates is not well established, and there are concerns about the appropriateness of using bitter herbs in this vulnerable population. Thus, while its use is rooted in tradition, there is currently insufficient scientific evidence to support or recommend Chirata for the treatment of infant jaundice. Clinical guidelines for neonatal jaundice do not mention Chirata, and its use should be approached with caution.
