Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Cicada (Cicadae Periostracum), the molted exoskeleton of cicadas, is a traditional ingredient in Chinese medicine. Its use to treat jaundice in infants is based primarily on historical and traditional practices rather than scientific validation. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), cicada molting is believed to dispel "wind-heat" and is commonly used to treat convulsions, fever, and skin eruptions in children; it is sometimes included in herbal formulas for infantile jaundice. However, these uses are rooted in TCM theory rather than biomedical evidence. There are no high-quality scientific studies or clinical trials demonstrating the efficacy or safety of cicada for treating jaundice in infants. The available evidence consists of case reports and TCM literature, with no rigorous pharmacological or clinical validation. As a result, the use of cicada for this purpose is considered traditional, with minimal scientific support.
