Aralia, particularly species such as Aralia racemosa (American spikenard) and Aralia elata (Japanese angelica tree), has a history of traditional use in herbal medicine for supporting joint health and treating rheumatic conditions. Native American and traditional East Asian medicinal systems have used roots and extracts of Aralia plants for their purported anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. In these traditions, Aralia preparations were applied topically or taken internally to alleviate symptoms of arthritis, joint pain, and muscle aches. However, there is limited scientific research to robustly validate these effects. Most of the available evidence is anecdotal or based on historical texts rather than modern clinical trials. Some phytochemical studies suggest Aralia species contain saponins and other compounds that may have mild anti-inflammatory effects, but rigorous studies in humans are lacking. Therefore, while Aralia's reputation as a remedy for joint discomfort is rooted in traditional use, current scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for joint health remains weak and insufficient for a higher evidence rating.
