Bromelain is a mixture of proteolytic enzymes derived from the pineapple plant (Ananas comosus). Its use to support joint health is primarily based on its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Several clinical studies and systematic reviews have evaluated bromelain for conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Research indicates that bromelain may reduce pain and inflammation in joints, potentially by modulating inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and cytokines, and by decreasing the migration of neutrophils to sites of inflammation.

A 2006 systematic review (Alt Med Rev, 2006;11(4):302-8) noted that bromelain appears to be effective in reducing pain and swelling in patients with osteoarthritis, with some studies suggesting it has comparable efficacy to NSAIDs for mild to moderate knee pain. Another review (Evid Based Complement Alternat Med, 2012;2012:1-12) found moderate evidence supporting its use for osteoarthritis, though the authors called for larger, higher-quality trials. The mechanism is thought to involve both direct effects on inflammatory pathways and indirect effects via improved absorption of nutrients or medications.

Overall, while bromelain is not universally endorsed by major medical guidelines, moderate scientific evidence exists supporting its role as an adjunct in managing joint inflammation and pain. Its safety profile is generally favorable, though it can interact with anticoagulant medications. Thus, bromelain's use for joint support is justified by scientific, albeit moderate, evidence.
