Calanus finmarchicus, a species of copepod found in the North Atlantic, is a source of marine oil that has recently gained attention as a dietary supplement, particularly for joint health. The justification for its use in supporting the joints body system is primarily scientific, though the evidence is still emerging and not as robust as for some other marine oils like fish or krill oil.

Calanus oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), as well as wax esters and astaxanthin. Several preclinical studies (e.g., in rodents) suggest that Calanus oil may reduce markers of inflammation and improve metabolic parameters associated with joint health. A few small human studies have investigated its effects: a 2018 pilot study published in the journal Arthritis reported that supplementation with Calanus oil improved joint-related symptoms in older women with osteoarthritis, although the sample size was limited and the study duration was short. The proposed mechanism involves anti-inflammatory effects mediated by omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to impact cytokine production and immune cell function.

However, comprehensive clinical evidence is lacking, and there are no large-scale, long-term randomized controlled trials to definitively establish efficacy for joint support. Most of the current evidence is preliminary. In summary, while there is a scientific rationale and some early supportive studies, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is moderate at best.
