Cherry, particularly tart cherry (Prunus cerasus), has garnered scientific interest for its potential benefits in supporting joint health. The primary mechanism attributed to cherries is their high content of anthocyanins, which are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. Several clinical studies have investigated the effects of tart cherry juice or extract in people with osteoarthritis and other joint pain conditions. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in Osteoarthritis and Cartilage (2012) found that patients with knee osteoarthritis who consumed tart cherry juice experienced modest reductions in pain and inflammation markers compared to a placebo group.

Additionally, cherries may lower levels of uric acid, which is relevant to gout, a type of arthritis. Research published in Arthritis & Rheumatism (2012) observed that cherry intake was associated with a reduced risk of gout attacks. The anti-inflammatory effects are thought to be due to the inhibition of cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), similar to the action of some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

While the evidence is not conclusive and larger, longer-term studies are needed, current research provides a moderate scientific basis for the use of cherry products in supporting joint health and managing symptoms related to joint inflammation and pain.
