Currants, particularly black currant (Ribes nigrum), have a long history of traditional use in supporting joint health. In European folk medicine, black currant leaves and berries have been used for centuries to help manage symptoms associated with rheumatism and arthritis, such as joint pain and inflammation. The rationale for their use is typically attributed to the presence of certain phytochemicals, especially gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) in the seed oil, and anthocyanins and flavonoids in the fruit itself. These compounds are believed to possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically benefit joint health. However, while there is some preliminary research on black currant seed oil and its anti-inflammatory effects, robust clinical evidence specifically linking currant consumption (fruit or leaf preparations) to improved joint health in humans is limited. The majority of scientific studies are either animal-based or in vitro, and human trials are sparse, often small in sample size, and not always focused directly on joint symptoms. As a result, while traditional use is well documented, and the biochemical rationale is plausible, the scientific validation remains weak.
