Glucosamine potassium sulfate is commonly used as a dietary supplement to support joint health, particularly in the management of osteoarthritis. The scientific evidence for its efficacy is mixed. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have evaluated glucosamine (most frequently in the sulfate form, including potassium sulfate) for relief of joint pain and slowing of osteoarthritis progression, especially in the knee. Some studies report a modest benefit in pain reduction and improved function compared to placebo, while others find little to no difference. Large-scale reviews, such as those published in BMJ and Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, generally conclude that while glucosamine is safe, its clinical benefit is small and may not be clinically significant for most people. The American College of Rheumatology does not recommend glucosamine for routine use due to the inconsistent evidence. However, its traditional use and positive anecdotal reports have contributed to its popularity. In summary, there is some scientific support for glucosamine potassium sulfate in joint health, but the overall quality and consistency of the evidence is limited, resulting in a moderate-to-low rating of 2 out of 5 for scientific support.
