Oxindole alkaloids are most notably found in the plant Uncaria tomentosa, commonly known as Cat's Claw, which has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems of South America, particularly among indigenous peoples in the Amazon. Traditionally, Cat's Claw has been used for its anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating properties, and it is often employed to support joint health, especially in conditions characterized by inflammation such as arthritis and rheumatism. The use of Cat's Claw for joints is rooted in this ethnobotanical tradition rather than robust scientific evidence.

There is some preclinical and preliminary clinical research suggesting that oxindole alkaloids and other constituents in Cat's Claw may have anti-inflammatory effects, which could theoretically benefit joint health. However, the clinical evidence is limited and generally of low quality, often involving small sample sizes or lacking rigorous methodology. For example, some small trials have reported minor improvements in symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, but these findings have not been consistently replicated or confirmed in larger, high-quality studies. As a result, the use of oxindole alkaloids to support the joints is primarily justified by traditional use, with only weak scientific support.
