Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is a protein that plays a key role in the regulation of cell growth and division, particularly in connective tissue. Its use in supporting the joints—especially in the context of healing and regeneration—derives from its ability to stimulate the proliferation and recruitment of cells involved in tissue repair, such as fibroblasts and mesenchymal stem cells. PDGF is a major component of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, which has seen increasing interest in orthopedic and sports medicine for conditions such as osteoarthritis, tendon injuries, and ligament sprains.

Scientific evidence for the use of PDGF (predominantly via PRP) in joint support is moderate. Several randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews suggest that PRP injections, which are rich in PDGF and other growth factors, can lead to modest improvements in pain and function in knee osteoarthritis and certain tendon injuries compared to placebo or hyaluronic acid. However, results are variable, study quality is often low to moderate, and the clinical significance of observed benefits remains debated. There is biological plausibility for PDGF’s role in joint healing, but more standardized, high-quality studies are needed to define optimal protocols and identify which patient populations benefit most. PDGF is not used traditionally for joint support; its use is based on modern biomedical research and regenerative medicine approaches.
