Rockweed refers to several species of brown seaweed, most commonly Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus. Traditionally, various seaweeds including rockweed have been used in folk medicine for their purported health benefits, including supporting joint health and managing symptoms associated with rheumatism and arthritis. This use is primarily rooted in historical practices, particularly in coastal regions of Europe and Asia, where seaweed has long been consumed as food and used in topical applications such as seaweed baths thought to relieve joint pain and inflammation.
The rationale behind this traditional use often cites the mineral content of rockweed, especially iodine, magnesium, and other trace elements, as well as the presence of certain polysaccharides such as fucoidan and alginates. These compounds have been suggested—largely based on in vitro and animal studies—to possess anti-inflammatory properties. However, direct scientific evidence from human clinical trials supporting rockweed’s efficacy for joint health is limited and not robust.
