Shikonin is a naphthoquinone compound derived from the root of Lithospermum erythrorhizon, commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Historically, the root extract has been applied for its anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties, and it is sometimes incorporated into remedies aimed at supporting joint health, particularly for conditions like arthritis and rheumatism. The rationale in traditional practices is primarily based on its purported ability to "clear heat" and "cool the blood," which, in TCM philosophy, may correlate with reducing inflammation and alleviating pain in the joints.

From a modern scientific perspective, shikonin has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in vitro and in animal models. Some studies report that shikonin and its derivatives inhibit inflammatory mediators such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and COX-2, which are implicated in joint inflammation. However, direct clinical evidence supporting its efficacy for joint conditions in humans is lacking, and most studies are preclinical. There are no large-scale randomized controlled trials evaluating its use specifically for joint health. Therefore, while there is some mechanistic basis and a long history of traditional use, the scientific evidence remains limited, and its use for supporting the joints is primarily justified by traditional rather than robust clinical validation.
