Spatholobus, particularly Spatholobus suberectus, is a traditional medicinal plant widely used in East Asian medicine, especially in China. For centuries, its dried stem (known as "Ji Xue Teng" in Chinese) has been included in herbal formulations aimed at promoting blood circulation, relieving pain, and supporting joint health. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it is commonly prescribed to address conditions classified as "wind-dampness," which often correspond to joint pain and stiffness, such as arthritis and rheumatism. The rationale is based on TCM principles rather than modern biomedical mechanisms.

Scientific research on Spatholobus for joint support is limited. Some laboratory and animal studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in extracts of Spatholobus, which could hypothetically be beneficial for joint health by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. However, these findings are preliminary and not directly linked to clinical outcomes in humans with joint disorders. There are few, if any, well-controlled clinical trials assessing its efficacy for joint health in humans. Thus, while traditional use is robust, scientific validation remains weak. The main justification for using Spatholobus to support the joints is historical and cultural rather than evidence-based.
