Terminalia, particularly species such as Terminalia chebula and Terminalia arjuna, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. In the context of joint health, Terminalia is most commonly used as part of polyherbal formulations such as Triphala, rather than as a standalone treatment. Historically, it has been used for its purported anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which are believed to indirectly support joint health by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress that can contribute to joint disorders. However, direct traditional references to Terminalia as a primary remedy for joint conditions such as arthritis are limited.
Scientific studies on Terminalia’s effects on the joints are sparse. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts from Terminalia species possess anti-inflammatory compounds, such as gallic acid and chebulinic acid, which may inhibit inflammatory mediators relevant to joint health. However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically investigating Terminalia for joint support are lacking. Most of the evidence remains preclinical or anecdotal, and therefore, the strength of evidence is modest.
