Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) is a multifunctional cytokine that plays a significant role in tissue repair, immune regulation, and the maintenance of cartilage and bone homeostasis. Scientific evidence supports the involvement of TGF-β in joint health, particularly in the context of osteoarthritis and cartilage regeneration. TGF-β is essential for the synthesis of extracellular matrix components, such as collagen and proteoglycans, that are crucial for cartilage structure and function. Experimental studies, both in vitro and in animal models, demonstrate that TGF-β can stimulate chondrocyte proliferation and matrix production, potentially supporting joint integrity. However, the relationship between TGF-β and joint health is complex: while appropriate levels may be protective and regenerative, excessive or dysregulated TGF-β signaling can contribute to pathological changes, including synovial fibrosis and osteophyte formation in osteoarthritis.
Despite these mechanistic insights, direct clinical evidence for the use of TGF-β as a therapeutic supplement or intervention for joint support in humans is limited. Most research focuses on TGF-β’s role in the pathophysiology of joint diseases, rather than its efficacy as a supplement.
