Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Adzuki bean (Vigna angularis) has a long history of use in East Asian traditional medicine, particularly in Chinese and Japanese herbal practices. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), adzuki beans are thought to support kidney health and promote diuresis (the increased production of urine), which was believed to help "clear heat" and "remove toxins." This is why adzuki beans are sometimes referenced in folk remedies for urinary tract issues, including kidney infections. However, there is no direct historical record of adzuki beans being used as a primary or specific treatment for kidney infections, but rather as a general kidney-supportive food. From a scientific perspective, there is little to no clinical evidence supporting the effectiveness of adzuki beans for treating kidney infections. Most modern research focuses on their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and general health-promoting properties, but not on their ability to treat infections of the kidney. The use of adzuki beans for this purpose is therefore grounded in tradition rather than validated by rigorous scientific studies. As such, while adzuki beans remain a healthy food choice rich in fiber and nutrients, they should not be relied upon as a treatment for kidney infections, which require prompt medical intervention and antibiotics.
