Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Allium tuberosum Rottl., commonly known as Chinese chive or garlic chive, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, this herb is sometimes associated with supporting kidney health, although the term "kidney" (Shen) in TCM does not directly correspond to the anatomical kidney but rather to a broader set of physiological functions, including vitality, reproductive health, and fluid regulation. There are traditional formulas and practices that use Allium tuberosum seeds or leaves for conditions believed to be related to deficiencies or imbalances in the kidney system, but the specific use for acute or chronic kidney infection (such as pyelonephritis) is not robustly documented. From a scientific perspective, there is limited research on Allium tuberosum for treating actual kidney infections. Some laboratory studies have reported antimicrobial effects of Allium tuberosum extracts, but these are general in vitro findings and do not specifically address kidney pathogens or demonstrate clinical efficacy. No clinical trials or strong pharmacological studies have validated its use for kidney infection in humans. Thus, while the herb is traditionally linked with "kidney" support in TCM, there is little to no scientific evidence to justify its use for kidney infections as understood in modern Western medicine.
