Evidence supporting the use of: Angelica
For the health condition: Kidney Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Angelica (genus Angelica, often Angelica archangelica or Angelica sinensis) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Europe and Asia. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and some European herbal traditions, Angelica roots have been used to support urinary tract health and to promote diuresis (increased urine flow). Its use for kidney-related conditions, including kidney infections (pyelonephritis), is largely based on these traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. The rationale in folk medicine is that Angelica’s purported diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects may help "cleanse" the urinary tract and relieve symptoms of infection. However, there is a lack of high-quality clinical trials or pharmacological studies directly supporting its effectiveness for treating kidney infections specifically. Most available scientific research on Angelica focuses on its phytochemical constituents and general antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory properties, not on kidney infection models. Therefore, while Angelica is traditionally used for urinary and kidney health in some cultures, this use is not substantiated by modern clinical research, and it should not be relied upon as a primary treatment for kidney infections, which require prompt medical attention and antibiotics.
