Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Baccharoides anthelmintica (synonym: Vernonia anthelmintica), known commonly as Kalijiri, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and folk medicine in India. Within these systems, the seeds and other parts of the plant are considered to have diuretic and antimicrobial properties, and have sometimes been used to address urinary tract issues, including kidney complaints and infections. However, the references are largely anecdotal or based on traditional herbal compendia rather than systematic clinical studies.

Scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for kidney infections is very limited. A small number of laboratory studies have examined the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of extracts from Baccharoides anthelmintica, but these studies are not specific to kidney infection pathogens, nor are they conducted in human subjects with kidney infections. There are no robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies demonstrating that this plant is effective or safe for treating kidney infections.

In summary, while Baccharoides anthelmintica is used traditionally for various urinary issues, including those related to the kidneys, its use for kidney infection specifically is based on traditional knowledge, and the scientific evidence base is weak to nonexistent.
