Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Baliospermum montanum is a plant used in traditional Ayurvedic and folk medicine in India and some other Asian regions. It is cited in classical Ayurvedic texts and ethnobotanical surveys as being used for various ailments, including as a purgative, for liver disorders, skin diseases, and sometimes for genitourinary problems. The root is particularly noted for its use in traditional formulations. However, the direct usage of Baliospermum for "kidney infection" (such as pyelonephritis or bacterial kidney infection) is not robustly documented in either classical texts or modern ethnomedicinal surveys. Instead, its traditional uses are more broadly in urinary disorders or to promote diuresis, which may tangentially relate to kidney health.

Scientific validation for the use of Baliospermum montanum in treating kidney infection is extremely limited. A few in vitro and animal studies have indicated potential antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of the plant's extracts, but these are preliminary and not specific to pathogens or conditions causing kidney infections in humans. There is no substantial clinical or pharmacological evidence to support its efficacy or safety for treating kidney infections. Thus, the evidence is primarily traditional, with very weak and indirect support, and its use for this specific condition should be approached with caution.
