Rating (out of 5): 1

Bengal Fig (Ficus benghalensis), also known as the Banyan tree, is widely used in various traditional medicine systems, especially in Ayurveda and folk medicine in South Asia. Its bark, leaves, and aerial roots are used in traditional remedies for a variety of ailments, including kidney-related issues. However, the specific use of Bengal Fig for treating or supporting kidney infections (such as pyelonephritis) is primarily based on traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific evidence.

In Ayurvedic texts, preparations made from the bark and roots of the Bengal Fig are sometimes recommended for urinary disorders, which may loosely include infections. The rationale is generally based on the plant's purported anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and diuretic properties attributed to its phytochemicals such as flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. However, actual references to kidney "infection" are rare and are more often generalized as urinary or renal problems.

Scientifically, there is limited research evaluating the efficacy of Ficus benghalensis specifically for kidney infections in humans. Some in vitro studies suggest mild antibacterial activity of extracts from the plant, but these are not directly linked to clinical treatment of kidney infections. Therefore, while the use of Bengal Fig for kidney infections exists in traditional practice, there is little to no modern clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness for this condition.
