Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Benzoin siam, a resin obtained from the tree Styrax tonkinensis, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Southeast Asia. Its applications have primarily centered around respiratory ailments, wound healing, and as an aromatic component in incense and balms. In some traditional medical practices, benzoin-containing preparations have been used for their perceived antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, which may theoretically relate to treating a variety of infections, including urinary tract ailments. However, there is no robust documentation that specifically details the use of Benzoin siam for kidney infections, also known as pyelonephritis. The association is more likely to stem from its general use for “infections” or as a disinfectant in folk medicine, rather than a targeted treatment for kidney infections. Furthermore, scientific research on Benzoin siam focuses mostly on its topical application and antimicrobial activity in vitro, with no clinical trials or pharmacological studies supporting its efficacy for kidney or urinary tract infections. Therefore, any use of Benzoin siam for kidney infection is justified by tradition rather than scientific validation, and the strength of evidence remains very weak.
