Evidence supporting the use of: Birch (unspecified)
For the health condition: Kidney Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Birch (Betula species) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and parts of Asia, as a diuretic and for supporting urinary tract health. Traditional healers have used birch leaf tea or extracts to promote urine flow, with the aim of "flushing out" the urinary tract, including the kidneys. This rationale underlies its use for conditions such as kidney gravel, urinary tract infections, and kidney inflammation. The German Commission E recognizes birch leaf for use in flushing therapy in mild urinary tract complaints, which might include minor kidney irritations, but not for active kidney infection (pyelonephritis).
However, modern scientific evidence specifically supporting birch for treating kidney infection is lacking. Most available studies focus on its mild diuretic effect and potential anti-inflammatory properties, but there are no robust clinical trials demonstrating efficacy for kidney infections. Moreover, kidney infections are serious bacterial conditions that generally require prompt antibiotic treatment, and relying on birch or any herbal remedy as the sole therapy is not supported by medical guidelines. Thus, while birch has traditional use for urinary tract health, evidence for its effectiveness in treating kidney infections is weak and limited to historical rather than scientific validation.
