Evidence supporting the use of: Black Nightshade
For the health condition: Kidney Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Black Nightshade (Solanum nigrum) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and various folk systems across Africa and Asia. It has been used for a variety of ailments, including as a remedy for kidney-related conditions, such as kidney infections (pyelonephritis). Traditional healers may prepare decoctions or extracts from the leaves, berries, or whole plant, claiming diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying effects, which are thought to help alleviate symptoms associated with urinary tract and kidney infections.
However, scientific validation for these uses is very limited. Few laboratory studies have indicated that Black Nightshade possesses anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, but there is a lack of rigorous clinical trials specifically examining its efficacy against kidney infections in humans. Furthermore, the plant contains potentially toxic alkaloids (such as solanine), which can pose health risks if consumed inappropriately. Most references to its use for kidney infection are anecdotal or based on traditional practice rather than scientific investigation. Overall, while there is a tradition of using Black Nightshade for kidney infections, the scientific evidence supporting its safety and effectiveness for this purpose is weak.
