Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cynodon dactylon (commonly known as Bermuda grass or Durva grass) has a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda, Unani, and folk medicine across India and parts of Africa. In these systems, it is reputed as a diuretic, and as a remedy for urinary tract conditions, including kidney infections and stones. The traditional application involves decoctions or fresh juice of the grass to "cleanse" the kidneys and urinary tract, reduce inflammation, and promote urine flow.

However, the scientific evidence supporting these traditional uses remains limited. A handful of in vitro and animal studies have suggested mild diuretic and anti-inflammatory effects. Some research indicates antioxidant properties, which could theoretically support kidney health, but direct studies on kidney infection (pyelonephritis) are lacking. No robust clinical trials in humans have been published to confirm effectiveness or safety for kidney infections. Thus, while traditional use is well-documented, scientific validation is minimal, and the evidence can only be rated as weak (1/5).
