Evidence supporting the use of: European Golden Rod
For the health condition: Kidney Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
European Golden Rod (Solidago virgaurea) has a long history of traditional use in European herbal medicine, particularly for supporting urinary tract health, including kidney and bladder issues. Herbalists have employed golden rod as a diuretic, aiming to increase urine flow and "flush out" the urinary tract. It has been used in folk medicine as an adjunctive remedy for lower urinary tract infections and kidney inflammation, often in combination with other herbs.
Scientific validation for its effectiveness in treating kidney infections (pyelonephritis) specifically is limited. Several laboratory studies and animal experiments suggest that golden rod possesses mild anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic, and diuretic properties. Some in vitro research indicates potential antimicrobial effects, but these results have not been robustly confirmed in human clinical trials, especially not for kidney infections. Most human studies involving golden rod focus on its supportive use for mild lower urinary tract symptoms or prevention of kidney stone recurrence, rather than as a treatment for kidney infections.
Authoritative sources such as the European Medicines Agency recognize golden rod's traditional use for symptomatic treatment of minor urinary complaints, but not for serious conditions such as kidney infections. There is insufficient clinical evidence to recommend it as a sole or primary therapy for infections, which require prompt medical attention and antibiotics. Therefore, while European Golden Rod is traditionally used for urinary tract support, its use for kidney infections is not supported by solid scientific evidence.
