Rating (out of 5): 1

Flueggea suffruticosa (syn. Securinega suffruticosa) is a plant traditionally used in Chinese herbal medicine, often known as "Xiao Ji". In folk medicine, it has been used to treat a variety of ailments, including urinary tract conditions and kidney-related issues. The rationale for its use in kidney infections (pyelonephritis) is primarily based on its perceived anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, as described in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) texts. Preparations from the roots and aerial parts have been used to "clear heat" and "promote urination," which in TCM theory is believed to help treat infections and reduce inflammation in the urinary tract.

However, modern scientific studies directly evaluating the efficacy or safety of Flueggea suffruticosa specifically for kidney infection are scarce. Some pharmacological investigations have identified certain bioactive constituents with antibacterial or anti-inflammatory activity, but these studies are mostly preliminary and not specific to pathogens or mechanisms involved in kidney infections. No robust clinical trials or high-quality scientific evidence currently support its use for this indication. Therefore, its use for kidney infection is justified mainly by traditional practices rather than rigorous scientific validation.
